Portland Breakwater (Bug Light)

Portland Breakwater Light - also known as Bug Light - was originally built of wood in 1855. The current light is made of curved cast iron plates and dates from 1875. The light sits at the end of the Portland Breakwater, which still stands, but appears much shorter now as it was slowly absorbed by landfill during World War II when the New England Shipbuilding Corporation built two shipyards next to the lighthouse. This landfill is know owned by the City of South Portland and is known as Bug Light Park.
